Mackay’s Tye Jones made his step up to the Senior ranks a dramatic one at Round 1 of the 2019 CQ MX Series at Yeppoon, dominating the QMX 1 (Senior Open) and QMX 2 (Senior Lites) classes with a tally of 7 wins from 8 starts across the two classes.
More than 200 riders competed fiercely on a very tight and tricky Yeppoon race track over the weekend, as Jones took the Lites class ahead of Luke Weaver - the only rider to defeat him in a race all weekend - and Cody Hall.
In the premier QMX1 category, Jones took a perfect four from four to win the opening round from Luke Weaver and Ryan Eden.
In the Senior Women's class, Queensland Motocross Champion Nicole Kenny was perfect on her Kawasaki, scoring 140 points to take the early series lead, while Kirra Baxter (3,3,2,3) and Ellyse O’Connor (2,2,3,9) battled hard all weekend.
Kirra took 2nd spot on the podium while a front suspension problem got the better of Ellyse, who fell in the final race and finished 9th, costing her a spot on the podium. Amanda Cyprian took the third spot overall.
In the Juniors, fresh back from his recent trip to the Mini O’s in America, Zac Watson took 8 wins from 8 starts in the Junior Lites 2 stroke and Mini Lites 12-16 years divisions.
The West brothers Brad (Junior Lites 4 stroke) and Jason (Mini Lites 9-12 years) both won all their races comfortably.
Another worthy mention also in the Mini Lites 9-12 years class is much improved young female rider Darci Whalley, who finished on equal second place points with Koby Tate. Darci finished 3rd after the count-back. Darci was one of four girls to mix it with the boys in the small wheels 85cc division.
Round 2 of the CQMX series will be held at 6 Mile Raceway in Rockhampton on the 16th and 17th of March. With Rockhampton set to host the 2020 Australian Junior Nationals, we’re expecting big fields at the loamy, 6 Mile Circuit in a few weeks.
