The subject of today’s In-Focus article is Wayne Neven – Townsville Motorcycle Club and long-time motocross Scrutineer, Engine Measurer, Coach, Clerk of Course and Track Inspector, who has worked his roles all over Queensland. Let’s ask him some questions.
Q1: In your role, at what venue and in what role are we most likely to find you?
WN: At Townsville Motorcycle Club as a Scrutineer as well other clubs around Queensland.
Q2: How long have you been a supporter of the sport and what other capacities and/or locations have you acted to do so?
WN: Around 15 years also as an engine measure coach and track inspector. Not sure, maybe 10 to 12 years as a Level 4 Scrutineer, I also hold a Clerk of course, Steward and Coaching. I have officiated all over Queensland -primarily as a Scrutineer – at events from club days to Queensland and Australian title meetings. The Australian junior title in Rockhampton was probably the biggest meeting I have been involved in.
Q3: How did you come to find yourself in this role?
WN: I started scrutineering for clubs when my two sons started to race it was my way of volunteering at the meetings.
I started back racing and my two sons got involved in racing motocross bikes as well. I found Scrutineering was the easiest job on the day to volunteer for while still being able to ride while looking after my children. Plus, a mechanical background i think helped choosing something to volunteer for.
Q4: What is the attraction? What keeps you coming back?
WN: Just the love of motorbikes and the social side of it. I have made a lot of good friends over the years and probably have upset a few – that’s life. I think it’s a good family sport as well.
Q5: Who is the most amazing rider you’ve encountered along the way?
WN: Chad Reed i met him at a signing session at motorbike shop when came over to ride supercross when Jeremy McGrath rode in Australia. That was pretty cool.
